Extracting Map Data from Mining Documents

Geographic Search and Referencing Platforms

The mining industry generates millions of documents a year, not only from geotechnical data but from training, regulatory, personnel, and legal departments. While specialized geotechnical and GIS applications enable the storage, analysis and retrieval of the structured portion of this information in map views, the key piece of information needed to support a business critical decision is more likely to be stored on a shared drive in Word, PowerPoint, Adobe or Excel, in a SharePoint document repository, or on a web page.

JANUARY 5, 2012 MEG LUNCHEON

Please join us for the Calgary Mineral Exploration Group Society's first luncheon of 2012 with David Laing!

Thursday, January 5, 2012 (1130 AM) in the Okanagan Room of the Ramada Hotel Downtown we're pleased to welcome Presenter David Laing exploring the Turkey Mountain porphyry copper gold prospect.

Turkey Mountain Abstract

The Turkey Mountain porphyry copper gold prospect is a grass roots exploration program targeting a circular aeromag anomaly in the center of a steep sided plateau locally known as Turkey Mountain.

Turkey Mountain is a remnant strato –volcano that has been age dated and found to date match Eocene Babine Intrusions at the Bell and Granisle mines.

Turkey Mountain directly offsets both the Bell and Granisle mines and it is postulated that the intrusions containing mineralization at both of the legacy mines are off shoot conduits of the main intrusion at Turkey Mountain.

The Bell mine recovered 1.2 million oz. silver, 0.4 million oz. gold, and 672 million lbs. copper, and the Granisle mine recovered 2.2 million oz. of silver, 0.2 million oz. of gold, and 472 million lbs. of copper.

About the Presenter: David Laing

David graduated in Earth Resources at NAIT in 1980. He worked for Gulf Canada Resources for fifteen years in Reservoir Engineering.

He spent seven years working in Russia from 1990 to 1998 on two joint ventures, one for Gulf in the Komi republic, and the other for Black Sea Energy in the Kuban, north Caucus region.

As Vice President Alberta, David oversaw the G+G and operational activities for Dominion Exploration Canada Limited, and was on the board of the Canadian subsidiaries of Dominion Resources Inc.  Currently he is the Manager Operations and Facilities for Bellatrix Exploration Ltd.

He is also President of 753027 Alberta Ltd and is actively pursuing a grass roots porphyry copper gold prospect in the Babine Lake area of British Columbia.

Basics of Gravity and Magnetic Methods in Exploration

These passive geophysical methods aim to detect map-scale variations in the earth’s gravity and magnetic fields that are related to lateral variations in rock composition. Data recording can be done on the ground and in the air, on local and regional scales. Useful regional data coverage in North America is available free from government sources.
